How to Reduce the Sudden Death of Infants
Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is a tragic and heartbreaking phenomenon that no parent should ever have to experience. Sudden infant death syndrome is the sudden and unexplained death of an infant under one year of age. Despite decades of research, the exact cause of SIDS remains unknown. However, there are a number of steps that parents and caregivers can take to reduce the risk of SIDS in their infants.
## Follow the ABCs of Safe Sleep
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends the ABCs of safe sleep in order to reduce the risk of SIDS:
- **A**lone: Place the infant on his or her back in a crib, bassinet, or other sleep surface that is designed for infants and free of blankets, pillows, and other objects
- **B**ack: Place the infant on his or her back on a firm sleep surface that is covered by a fitted sheet
- **C**ool: Keep the room temperature at a comfortable level
- **S**haring: Do not share the sleep surface with the infant or allow the infant to sleep in the same bed as an adult or other child.
## Create a Safe Sleep Environment
In order to create a safe sleep environment for an infant, parents and caregivers should take the following steps:
- Place the infant’s crib or bassinet in the parents’ room, close to the parents’ bed.
- Place the infant on his or her back in the crib or bassinet.
- Avoid the use of soft bedding, such as blankets, pillows, and stuffed animals.
- Avoid the use of sleep positioners, such as wedges or nests, which can restrict the infant’s breathing.
- Avoid smoking, drinking alcohol, or using drugs around the infant.
- Avoid overheating the infant’s room.
## Monitor Your Child's Sleep
In addition to creating a safe sleep environment, parents and caregivers should also monitor their infant’s sleep. They should:
- Check on the infant periodically throughout the night.
- Place the infant on his or her back if they are found sleeping on their stomach.
- Make sure the infant is not too hot or too cold.
- Make sure the infant is not sleeping in a position that could restrict their breathing.
By following the ABCs of safe sleep and creating a safe sleep environment, parents and caregivers can reduce the risk of SIDS in their infants. However, it is important to remember that SIDS is still a mysterious and unpredictable phenomenon, and no amount of precautions can completely eliminate the risk.
